Friday Night in San
Franciscowas a historic appearance by guitar superstars Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, and Paco DeLucia, at the
Warfield Theater in San Francisco one Friday night in 1981. The internationally acclaimed Guitar Trio
exponentially increased their base of devoted aficionados with the seamless
mingling of their individual compositional ingenuity and improvisation. This
famous trio of acoustic guitarists was captured live in a loose and spontaneous
performance, the likes of which the guitar-playing community rarely sees. Friday Night in San Francisco catches all
three at the top of their game, full of fire and superhuman chops,
complementing each other’s solos with percussive, driving rhythm background. Atonal striking of the guitar body and
running picks along the strings added a humorous element that balanced-out the
rapid-fire licks. Before the evening was
finished they had played a blues number and quoted the Pink Panther theme
banishing the trio’s super-serious image.
Rather than being a codified musical style, the quality of their fusion
compositions exemplified their high level of technique with sensitivity and
dynamic variation.

When Andre’ Previn conducted this masterpiece he was in his early 40’s, young for an accomplished conductor. Yet, he had been a celebrated participant in the classical music world for a quarter of a century. In concerts and on recordings Previn demonstrated sturdy command of the standard repertoire. His performances and recordings won him a continuous procession of critical accolades. At the time of this recording Previn had conducted one hundred concerts per year and had produced approximately a dozen recordings per year.
It was no sudden access of patriotism that led Tchaikovsky to compose his “1812” Overture. Nicolai Rubinstein asked Tchaikovsky to write a festive piece to be performed during the Moscow Exhibition of Arts and Industry of 1882 to be performed at the consecration of the new Cathedral of the Savior which was to commemorate the liberation of Moscow from Napoleon’s forces in 1812. At first, Tchaikovsky hesitated to accept the invitation, but once started his imagination ran wild. His plan was for the overture to be performed in the square in front of the Kremlin with a very large orchestra with real cannons to be set off in the distance. As it so happened, the celebration was moved to the summer of 1881and was carried off much more sedately. The overture was performed for the first time in the fall on 1882 at an exposition of Tchaikovsky’s works with a much smaller orchestra and no cannons.

A pioneer of blending world music and jazz, going back to early Latin-tinged fusion outings like 1976's Land of the Midnight Sun, 1977's Elegant Gypsy and 1978's Casino, the guitar greats continue to reflect the rich influence of flamenco, tango. DiMeola’s debut as a solo artist in 1976, Land of the Midnight Sun, was a blazing showcase of his signature chops and Latin-tinged compositions. Over the course of six more albums with Columbia Records -- Elegant Gypsy, Casino, Splendido Hotel, Electric Rendezvous, Tour De Force and Scenario -- Al established himself as an influential force in contemporary music.
